India won the World Youth Olympiad Chess Championship!

In the final round of the World Youth Olympiad Chess championship, India defeated England 3.5-0.5 and emerged victorious in Turkey after their triumph in World Junior Chess Championship. Adhiban, Sethuraman and Priyadharshan scored victories against Zhou, Kilpatrick and Auckland to help their country to get the gold medal. India won the World Youth Chess Olympiad for the second time in a row. Russia defeated Azerbaijan 2.5-1.5 and finished on 28 points. After the seventh round of the World Under16 Olympiad, the fight for the top spot became tight again and there will be some decisive and dramatic matches to be played tomorrow, since there are going to be two of the last three rounds. Philippines defeated Russia 3-1 while India outscored Georgia with 3.5-0.5. Armenia swept of England with 4-0 while Azerbaijan surpassed Slovakia with 3-1. Abhijeet and Harika won the World Junior Chess Championship on the Independence Day!

World Junior Chess Championship 2008 ended dramatically as it started. Abhijeet Gupta won against David Howell to win the World Junior Championship title. Arik Braun and Parimarjan Negi drew their game as Eltaj Safarli and Maxim Rodshtein. Parimarjan Negi won the silver medal by 9.5 points. Third place was shared by Arik Braun, David Howell, Eltaj Safarli, Hou Yifan and Bassem. Harika became the second Indian to win the World Junior Girls Chess Championship. Harika has a unique record of winning all the age group titles at the world level from under-10 to under-20. The first Indian girl ever to become the junior world champion was Koneru Humpy, also from Andhra Pradesh, in 2001. Report with pictures and games.....more >>
Botswana: Creating Chess Cult in Africa!!

The big African continent is in deep Chess slumber but one of its tiny nations, Botswana is all set wake up the giant from its sleep by hosting the 1st ever FIDE CACDEC FIDE Trainer’s Seminar at Gaborone from 03rd to 08th August 2008 and, in the process got 10Licensed Chess Trainers!
Botswana has only 31-rated players (inactive and active) inclusive of 1 FM & 1 WFM and very few tournaments. As such, when FIDE decided to provide this opportunity through cACDEC, it was wholeheartedly welcomed by the Chess fraternity of Botswana with 10-trainers (including one from Somalia) registering for the seminar. Anand beats Carlsen, wins World Rapid Chess Championship at Mainz

It was the final many were waiting for. Vishy Anand against Magnus Carlsen. The experienced Indian against the young Norwegian. The reigning World Champion against the player many consider to be the coming World Champion. But Anand used his experience and skill to show why he is the World’s number one. He gave his young opponent no chances and defended his title of World Champion without trouble.
In the Computer World Championship, Rybka defended Chess960 title after tough final with Shredder. In the women's section, Alexandra Kosteniuk won the final against Kateryna Lahno to become World Champion. Report with games and pictures. GRENKELEASING Rapid World Chess Championship is in progress as part of the Chess Classic Mainz. World Champion Viswanathan Anand will try for the eighth time in a row to defend his rapid chess title. All in all he won the main event of the Chess Classic no less than ten times. Harry Schaack talked to the World’s number one about the peculiarities of rapid chess and the opponents he will face this year. Chess960 Rapid World Chess Championship : Not perfect, but entertaining

The first half of the 2 FiNet Chess960 Rapid World Chess Championship produced entertaining though not perfect chess. It also showed that Alexandra Kosteniuk was able to handle the challenge of the limited time and the uncommon opening position best. After three rounds she leads with 2.5 points, followed by Kateryna Lahno with 2 points. Victorija Cmilyte scored 1.5 points while Natalia Zhukova had three promising positions and spoiled them all in time trouble to still remain on zero. Playing with a time limit of 20 minutes plus 5 seconds increment per move time proved to a crucial factor in all games. Read the report with pictures and games. ....more >>
Chess Art exhibition, a real visual treat

An exposition of chess paintings and artifacts "Schaakkunst" was hosted by city of Druten in The Netherlands. The exhibition included new works and new artists. It was a real visual treat to see these chess paintings. Most of the chess art is for sale and you can find beautiful chess-sets and many smaller articles, calendars, art prints, chess-art-wine, etc.
"Global Chess" exposition of Dutch Chess Art exhibition was opened on June 8th and closed on June 30, 2008. Total fifteen Dutch artists presented the art work, all linked to the game of chess. Report with excellent chess art paintings.

World Rapid Chess Championship and Chess 960 World Championship at Mainz, feast for chess lovers!

As it happens, the top three players on the live elo ranking list from 1 July, joined by the World’s best women player, Judit Polgar, will compete from 1. to 3. August for the 13th GRENKELEASING Rapid World Championship: World Champion and Number One Viswanathan Anand, Magnus Carlsen and Alexander Morozevich. In contrast to the FIDE-World ranking list, the live elo list includes the Aerosvit tournament in Foros, which finished in June and was won in superior style one point ahead of the field by Norwegian superstar Magnus Carlsen. Cancer sufferer George wins award for chess idea

A terminally ill cancer student has come up with an innovative way of encouraging youngsters to learn chess.
Anyone who has played will know it is not the easiest of games to learn. Pieces move forwards, backwards, left and right, diagonal, and even around corners. But chess fanatic George Eady, a second year student at Brighton University, has come up with a way to simplify the game, replacing the traditional rooks, knights and pawns with pieces depicting their movements.

Interview with Vladimir Kramnik

Vladimir Borisovich Kramnik is a Russian chess grandmaster. He was the World Chess Champion from 2000 to 2007. In October 2000, he beat Garry Kasparov and became the Classical World Chess Champion. Kramnik successfully defended his title against challenger Péter Lékó in a drawn match in 2004, while he defeated reigning FIDE World Champion Veselin Topalov in a unification match, the FIDE World Chess Championship 2006.
Garry Kasparov described Kramnik's style as pragmatic and tenacious. He is one of the toughest opponents to defeat, losing only one game over more than one hundred games leading up to his match with Kasparov, including eighty consecutive games without loss!
This interview was conducted by Czech journalist Pavel Matocha after the rapid chess match between Vladimir Kramnik and Czech GM David Navara. The interview was published in the Czech magazine "Weekly Euro". In this interview, Kramnik talks about Czech GM David Navara, chess ethics, chess world championship title, his upcoming match against Anand and his views on Garry Kasparov's political activities.

Chess960 computer chess world championship: The strongest chess tournament ever

This is the first time we'll have a Fide-category 29 tournament, in other words, the strongest tournament in the history of chess!
For the fourth time during the Chess Classic in Mainz, the Livingston Chess960 computer chess world championship will be held. Last, year we saw a four-program round robin with the strong participants Rybka, Shredder, Jonny and Spike. Rybka, developed by Vasik Rajlich won the final against the German top program Shredder to clinch home the title. Both programs will play in Mainz again this year and from 31st July to 2nd August. They will be challenged by two top chess programs, the qualifiers from the ICC online tournament: Naum, made by Alexander Naumov and Deep Sjeng, the brainchild of Belgian programmer Gian-Carlo Pascutto.

This is the story of Govind Mohan Lal, affectionately known as 'GM'in the Chess Circuit!
He had a bad day in the office and he was livid with himself. He had drawn his crucial 6th round game against his old foe that had pushed him into the joint 2nd spot with a score of 5 points. Had he won that game, he would have propelled himself into the top of the table. And, with 3-rounds remaining, would have been favourite to win this championship. Peter Leko vs Magnus Carlsen in Miskolc : Carlsen defeats Leko 5-3

Magnus Carlsen of Norway won the Miskolc rapid math series by defeating Hungarian top Grand Master and the local hero Peter Leko. In the eight match series first three games resulted in draws. In the fourth and seventh game Carlsen defeated Leko, other games end up with draw results.
